We’ve all heard about how twins have a psychic connection. According to Denzill (who has two identical siblings) he has experienced this throughout his life. As he described, sometimes he and his twin brother can look at each other and without uttering a word can know what the other is thinking in a variety of situations. But what is telepathy? Is it simply a familiarity with another person? Certainly couples, siblings, and close friends have a similar experience where they just know what the other is thinking. Is it merely due to circumstance and familiarity? Are they reading micro expressions and context cues?
As early as the late 19th century the magician and mentalist Washington Irving Bishop performed “thought reading” demonstrations. Though Bishop claimed no supernatural powers to achieve this, he ascribed it to muscular sensitivity (reading thoughts from unconscious bodily cues). Nevertheless Bishop was able to, among other things, identify a spot on a table with a hidden object by physical contact with a subject who knew the correct answer. Scientists concluded that Bishop was using a highly trained skill in detecting ideomotor movements. Perhaps reading minds was simpler in the 19th century. Or perhaps a similar skill can be trained to “read minds” now. Part of the ability to read minds seems connected with shared experience and familiarity. So it only makes sense that having a more closely shared experience increases chances for telepathy between people.
Whenever you hear a hole-related comment you know what an abbey tavern regular is thinking – they are envisioning a brazilian pensioner with a thirst for gold. We are developing telepathic links with our shared community. Even the larger community shares this. The spontaneous dreamland clap at a major, or the fact that 90% of us really were thinking ‘wow nice backair’ or ‘not like this’. So we should be grateful that we have grown together enough to read each other’s minds. We’re sharing in part of the human experience that not everyone gets to have.
